Travel and Learn: The seaside and the city
The program offers the possibility of knowing two very different aspects that also distinguish the beauties of Tuscany, even the less obvious ones.
In the collective imagination of Tuscany, made of art cities and hilly landscapes, the marine scenery is often not included. Actually, more than a third of Tuscany's perimeter is characterised by the sea: the islands in particular reveal an unexpected face and above all a surprising variety in plants, animals and human settlements.
Capraia Island is part of the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago, the largest marine park in Italy and the largest protected marine area in Europe.
2 week course: 1 week on Capraia Island + 1 week in Lucca or Florence

1 week in Capraia includes:
  • Transfers from/to the port of Livorno to/from Capraia with a Toremar ferry (about 3 hours each way)
  • Self catering accommodation: single room in apartment shared with the tutor
  • Individual course of Italian Language and Culture: 15 hrs/week on 5 mornings, 3 hrs/day
  • 2 excursions: walking two hiking paths exploring the coastline and the interior **
  • 1 cruise around the island on a small boat (2 hours)
  • 1 guided tour of the village and the surrounding area
  • 1 dinner
  • Assistance on the island

** The walking trails wind along internal paths (mule tracks) and coastal paths that, although presenting some differences in height, do not require special athletic training. It requires a state of good health, weatherproof basic equipment (windproof jacket, hat etc.) and above all good trekking shoes, in addition to the desire to be outdoors to enjoy the wonderful seascapes that the island offers.

1 week in Lucca or in Florence includes:
  • Italian course: 20 hours of group lessons, 4 hours a day from 9.00 to 13.00 + optional afternoon activities according to the program of the Course of Italian Language and Culture
  • Accommodation in a single room with use of private kitchen
Fee including course, accommodation and activities: € 1580

La città:
An urban walk “The City from the Walls”
This walk will help students get to know Lucca and the surrounding areas from the viewpoint of the Renaissance walls that encircles the city. The impressive green belt surrounding the historical center proposes a special way to admire the ever-changing scenery of the beautiful view of hills in the distance, or the city below with its unique charm of an ancient history and a modern daily life.
The walk ends with a welcoming drink at one of Lucca’s bars.

Tuesday
La collina:
A walk through the olive groves and vineyards that surround the historical homes of the old nobility of Lucca.
When you think about Tuscany, you probably visualize medieval villages, old churches, green cypress-lined roads and even hidden corners, set within a picturesque landscape of green fields, vineyards, silvery-green olive trees and rolling down hills. Well the good news is that it genuinely exists!
We round off the evening enjoying fresh local Tuscan food and good wine.

Wednesday
Il mare:
A walk down by the sea.
This walk starts in the Natural Park along the beautiful Tuscan coastline, where students will walk through the shaded paths snaking through copses of oak, alder, pine and juniper trees and explore the moorlands and the dunes, before finally reaching the sandy beaches of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Thursday
La montagna (full day excursion):
A walk through the mountains.
This walk will take students through the mountains north of Lucca, known as Garfagnana, the “green lungs of Tuscany.” Lunch in a typical local trattoria. In the afternoon the walk will continue to Barga, the most charming town of the region.

Friday
Il lago:
"The village of Massaciuccoli in the footsteps of Giacomo Puccini"
Massaciuccoli lake is a natural area which stretches between the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea and an impressive hillside. Its big environmental heritage is home to many unique animals and plants and the wildlife oasis and the Roman ruins from the 1st Century AD will make our hike unique. The steep mountainsides of the Apuan Alps defines this suggestive wide area of land. The excursion will end at Osteria Le Terme where we will enjoy locally produced salumi and other typical products.
